The first time I heard one of Douye’s song, I couldn’t help but wonder who the artist was. Reminding me of Sade Adu, her pure, sultry and smoky vocals comes with a sensual, jazzy musical style. I was extremely pleased when I found out the voice was from none other than a fellow Nigerian.
Nigerian born, Los Angeles based Douye, grew up influenced by several jazz and R&B legends, and this is very evident in her style. With musical influences like Peggy Lee, Ray Charles, Billie Holliday, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Sade, the multi-faceted performer began singing in church at the age of seven and quickly began focusing on her future as a professional singer. By age ten, she was expressing her innermost emotions in poetry, which led naturally to her development as a compelling songwriter. In her mid-teens, she traveled to Europe to pursue her growing musical dreams, and she later immigrated to the United States to study voice at the acclaimed Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. Upon graduating, Douye continued honing her singing, songwriting and musical direction, becoming a prolific writer and performing for audiences at clubs throughout Los Angeles. Teaming up with Terry Shaddick, they penned the songs that would launch Douye’s recording career on her newly released debut album: Journey. Journey is a perfect reflection of Douye’s musical and life experiences leading up to her exciting emergence as an independent singer/songwriter.

i think its a very 9ice soul music for relaxation, she should keep it up
Darn… Seems our Nigerian ladies are bad asses when it comes to good delicious jazzy slow jams. Sade Adu must have set the train loose. Those two jams on top are real nice for a first album. Won’t be surprised when “On for You” starts getting some serious radio rotation.
By the way, what part of the country is the name Douye from? Sounds Cameroonian to me. Any last names? Thanks for sharing.
Lagos boy! Douye hails from Bayelsa state. Her parents are from Bayelsa. “Douye” is actually a Nigerian name and it means “as I want it, that’s how it will be”. I don’t have any information on her real last name but i can work on that! She’s really nice and I can’t wait for some serious radio rotation. First time I heard her work was at an office. For a first album, she did really well!
