Repping Big Tizzy!

The first time I heard his “Faaji” track, I instantly digged it! Fuji is my thing and to have it merged with Naija hip-hop just did it for me!

Listen to “Faaji”

Born Adefolarin Lawal, Big Tizzy is a full-time entertainer and disk jockey based in the United Kingdom whose love for music developed while listening to his father’s collection of classic Fuji tunes. There’s no doubt that this influenced his music greatly as he fuses Naija Hip-Hop with Fuji vocals.  Hence, one can expect his musical influences to range from Barrister, Haruna Ishola to  P.Diddy, Jay Z,  and Snoop Dogg.

With his target audience as everyone from the youth to the older folks, he regards himself as a hardworking, lively and honest individual that loves and has an excellent taste for the finest things in life. With two albums on the way: a solo album called “My Product” and a group project on the way called “Jeun Lo”, there’s no doubt that he has a lot of work ahead of him and we look forward to what he has to offer! Hopefully more hot jamz!! Collaborating with artists such as TillaMan, Dolla-Billz, High Commission and Topsay (a.k.a Omo Ibadan) on his solo album, he says fans should buy his album because they can expect to get the value for their money. The album, according to him, portrays him to the listeners as a young, gifted individual who is more than just his good looks.

In addition to being a solo artist, Big Tizzy is also a member of the group “166 Family” which includes Dolla-Billz, Aspanda, Martel B and TillaMan. The group album called “Jeun Lo” is currently in the works, and will be released soon in stores.
Currently, Big Tizzy is promoting the “Jeun Lo” album with his group and they plan to take the Nigerian music Industry by storm when they start touring Nigeria in the near future. Without a doubt, this is definitely one artist to look out for.

I REP Big Tizzy!

Repping Deuce Gambles!

Deuce Gambles

Deuce Gambles

If you are  expecting to hear the same old tune  or beat that seems to be taking over and is being used by a lot of Nigerian artists, well you are in for a shocker! Deuce Gambles comes with a totally different style! My favorite track is “Cops come knockin”.  “We getting loud till the cops come knocking………………………….”

Listen to “Cops Come Knockin”

Born Fola Devontay Adeleye in Newark, New Jersey, Deuce Gambles is an artist of Nigerian descent who is also the co-founder of the hip-hop group Full Deck.  Although he is primarily a rapper, he also dabbles in some R & B singing.

Deuce Gambles who was born  in an underprivileged and crime filled Newark is a product of his environment whose harsh tough demeanor is reflected in his music.

Deuce Gambles who lists his musical influences as artists such as Cam’ron, Fabulous, Jadakiss and Jay-z reported that his passion for music was developed during his teenage years; he started in his basement with childhood friends while just goofing around, and he fell in love with music since then.  He founded the group “Full Deck” with his childhood friends but had to quit the group due to some creative differences.  Although Deuce is no longer a member of the group, he is still heavily associated with them and still collaborates with the group’s members.

Words such as “rude, disrespectful, nonchalant, and conceited” are frequently associated with this New Jersey native. Although characteristics such as these would usually cause a person to acquire a great amount of enemies, such traits have actually propelled Deuce Gambles to more stardom. Known for his unique rhyme scheme and clever punchlines, listeners continue to ponder on what he will say next.

Gambles tries not to focus his music on the hardship that he encountered while growing up in New Jersey. Instead, most of Gambles’ songs are about his everyday life and diverse topics. The sarcastic and cocky style that Deuce Gambles possesses is clearly unique. It is just a matter of time before Deuce Gambles becomes a household name. But until then, he will still be loved by many, and hated by many more, which is the way he likes it.  He lists his audience as any and everybody who can listen to his music. His main motivation is to prove people wrong, especially all of the people who doubt him. i am very conceited, confident, sarcastic, and enjoys being the life of the party.

His first mixtape entitled “Intelligent Menace” is currently in the works and on the verge of being finished with a tentative December 2009 release date. He decided to pick that title because he believes it is a great reflection of him, he is an intelligent, well educated person who can also be a menace.  He also added that although he is well educated, he grew up with the street mentality and can survive in both the corporate and “ghetto” areas.

There are numerous collaborations on the upcoming “Intelligent Menace” album such as songs featuring artists like Baby Spadez, Julz Diamondz, Sin City, Se7en, Rouga, Crazy 8, Fabolous, and Drake.

When asked what fans of his music can expect on this upcoming album, he replied saying “fans can expect good music, alot of slick and witty lines, good beats, good lyrics, and a cocky attitude“.

Although he already has numerous collaborations Deuce Gambles revealed that he is willing to work with any artists that feel like they could keep up with him.

I REP Deuce Gambles!

Repping Tolu!

tolu2

The first time I heard Tolu’s tracks, I was instantly hooked: awesome voice, nice smooth tracks with nice accompanying beats. We had the pleasure of asking him some questions and present to you some information he shared with us.

Born Tolu Adebayo in Brooklyn, New York to Nigerian parents, this prolific singer like most artists realized his passion for singing as a member of the choir at his church. Formerly known as Young Tone, this artist changed his name to Tolu to create his own identity and avoid being one of the many artists named Young Tone.  Though he started his music career back in high school with a band known as TC Connect, he went on to pursue his solo career after the band split up due to undisclosed reasons. With musical influences like Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Usher, Akon and the Dream, he describes his music genre has falling into the category of R&B, Pop and Inspirational music. Music has been the only thing that Tolu wanted to engage in and this singer/song writer who also plays the saxophone is ready to take the world by storm.

On his song “Ayo Music”, Tolu asks when music will give him a chance to finally do what he really wants to do. I personally love “Ayo Music”. Different style and sound!

Listen to “Ayo Music”

Unlike some modern artists who have become dependent on synthesizers to sound decent, this talented artist does not shy away from singing acapella.   If you attended the cultural night in New York during the 2009 Nigerian Independence Day celebrations, then you definitely witnessed greatness as he introduced his newest hit called “African girls”, a song showing appreciation for the African woman! I absolutely love it!!

 Listen to “African Girls”

As a singer and songwriter, Tolu has won many accolades including from notable bigwigs from the music industry including having a personal audition for Diddy’s reality show “Star Maker”. He is currently working with producers over at Jive Records ghost writing for a signed artist. Tolu was ranked number 2 on mixmatters.com as the  “Next Hottest Artist” and labeled as “Next in Line” by 24hourhiphop.com with his single being played over 10,000 times.

Similarly, Tolu’s fan base has experienced exponential growth, with over 250,000 plays on MySpace and hundreds of followers on twitter.  Tolu serves as a president of Bread Winners Entertainment Group which he founded with a close friend of his. Tolu is currently working on a independent album titled “Experience Love” which should be out early 2010. His album was named as such as he feels like a lot people don’t know the true meaning of Love and what it is to love someone. Hence, with this album, he will show his fans and listening audience what love is and what it means to be in love. I don’t know about you but I can’t wait for this album. We definitely might learn a thing or two from it! As to why you should buy his album, he says: “If you want to hear something new. I am the new sound of R&B and what everyone is looking for. If you are tired of hearing the same thing buy my album.” When not singing, writing songs or pursuing his entertainment career, Tolu can be found studying as he’s currently a student  majoring in media studies and also pursing my entertainment career as well. Though based in the States, he hopes to go back to Nigeria and establish himself while hopefully working with some Nigerian artists. He also hopes to one day work with well known international artists such as the likes of Kanye West and Usher.

Special shout-out and thank you to Femi A. from New York for putting us on to the greatness named Tolu that is about to unfold before our very eyes. His songs definitely appeal to a varying yet broad audience base!

This is definitely one artist to look out for now and in the coming years!

Repping Ezzie B!

ezzieb

Born Eziaku Ogbonna in Abia State, Ezzie B is a multi-talented artist who is an excellent rapper, poet, and performer. Ezzie who describes herself as having the “body of a model, and mind of a hustler” appeals to people of diverse backgrounds as she was born in Nigeria, but raised in the States. She has learned to merge both her African and American heritage in order to create awesome music. Ezzie’s music genre cannot be placed into just one category because her style is so versatile that she dabbles in different avenues from poetry to rap to singing; describes her target audience as “anyone who walks to the beat of life’s iambic pentameter.”

Not only is Ezzie B musically talented (she also plays the flute, piano and is learning the guitar), the young lady is also trilingual and incredibly intelligent. Ezzie who now resides in the United States is a jack of a couple of trades, and a master at both; Ezzie B who has dobbed herself the “Pharm Artist” finds time to balance her careers both as a musician and also as a Pharm.D Candidate at the University of Maryland where she is studying for her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree; the chick is beauty, flow and brains! When asked how she manages to find balance and exercise proper time management with both her music and pharmacy career, she replied, “Music is my first love and pharmacy is an arranged marriage. I am not monogamous, but I am faithful.”

Ezzie is also known for her sick blogisodes and freestyles; she has generated a lot of buzz for the freestyle that she laid out on the DJ Zeez Fokasibe track. She was also one of the femcees featured on the “Show Yourself” track alongside Zara, Nyja, Naira, and Felyne. Furthermore, Ms. Ezzie B is a seasoned MC, she has worked with the likes of Iceberg Slim, Perico White, Kel, Gucci Wally Wa, and DJs DeeMoney and Jimmy Jatt, just to name a few.

Ezzie also knows how to draw inspiration for her art from her true life experiences. For example, “Sister” is about her best friend who passed on to glory while “I’m a soldier” is an inspirational song in which she tells her fans to keep on going, working hard and proving their doubters wrong.

Ezzie B is already hard at work on her upcoming LP and is looking forward to continuing future projects with her Afrigang Family, and producers such as KidKonnect, Ex-O, Xela, Sazzy and a few others. She is looking forward to newer collaborations with artists that she has previously worked with and would love to work with more groundbreaking and up and coming artists and producers in the industry.

Due to her school schedule and a recent opportunity to further develop her project, her official album release date has been pushed back to the first quarter of 2010.

She’s definitely an artist to watch out for now and in the upcoming years!

Repping DJ Zeez!

djzeez

Oh Lawd, where do I start with DJ Zeez! This artist is so talented. He gets me on my feet every time. Let’s not even talk about my favorite song: Bobbee FC. DJ Zeez, a hit maker and producer, released three hot joints in a row: “Same ni”, “Fokasibe”, and “Bobbee FC”. Known for his clever use of metaphors in his song, he knows how to get his lyrics on the lips of his fans on first listen. Check out some favorite lines of mine from “Bobbee FC”:

Omoge Manchester, s’alewa united?

Eru to gbe yen lo n je ki n wa delighted

Iwo gan-an ni captain, o o ti e need jersey

Omoge easy, s’ofe ma ge DJ Zeez

Bi o se n shake e, mi o le take e

Original ni omo ko si fake e!

Born Kingsley Elikpo, DJ Zeez who hails from Imo State started out as a Disc Jockey back in secondary school at age 17 . Though he didn’t become a household name till he released the highly rated song: “Same ni” in 2005, he had released a single titled: “Orin tonba tife” in 2004 and was once part of a now split group:Xzist. His next single: “Fokasibe” which enjoyed tremendous play on the radio, clubs and parties re-launched him back into the scene in a major way. Perhaps, it’s best to clear the air on exactly what this word: “Fokasibe” means. Contrary to the harsh way it sounds and what you might think, “Fokasibe” is not a curse word but a slang which translates to praise of the utmost level. So regardless of the context it is used, it only means a good thing!

To all the readers of this post, ori yin fokasibe! You can translate that to mean: the head of each reader of this post is in the right place and correct!

Not only has he worked and produced for numerous artists such as 9ice, JJC of 419 squad, Konga and Tuface, he also plays the keyboard and has collaborated with artists such as 9ice, Lord of Ajasa, Ruggedman, and Mr. Solek. He won the 2009 Hip Hop Award for Best Street Hop for “Fokasibe” and there’s no doubt about his talent. Hence, expect more nominations and winnings from this artist. He’s definitely one artist to keep on your radar!!

I REP DJ Zeez!

Repping YQ!

YQ
YQ is one of the artists I saw perform at the 2009 NRC reunion! At this event, I had the pleasure of watching him entertain and work the crowd as he performed his hit single and award nominated song: Efimile.

YQ, born Yakubu Jubril, started out singing as a part of a group named QKrest which he formed with his former partner: Krest-up. This group had a huge hit titled: “Fire dance”. However, members of the group went their separate ways shortly after the release of this song. Nonetheless, this didn’t stop the now twenty-six year old artist from pursuing his dreams.

YQ, an amazing crooner, has a great deal of style ranging from R & B to Reggae. Currently signed to 2Koncept entertainment group, his single “Efimile” featuring Da Grin helped propel him back into pop stardom after his brief hiatus from the limelight. Like many other fans out there, I await the drop of his album! This new album has been creating a lot of buzz and features other artists such as Durella, Buzzman, Da Grin and Krest-up amongst others. YQ is also featured on songs such as “Area” by M.I and “Wine your Tinkolo” by Dampte.

When it comes to being a musician, dropping hot records is great, but being an awesome performer is also very important. Having seen YQ in concert this summer where he co-headlined the main concert of the NRC reunion with one of his musical influences, Mike Okri, I can definitely vouch that he is a great performer. He had everybody on their feet, sang every word to his songs ( no lip-syncing), and kept his energy level up throughout the show. I must also add that he did all of this without a hype-man! The guy is good!!!!

YQ has numerous bangers that have been released and he is constantly working on bringing out new ones with his most recent single titled “Money can’t buy me love”. As he continues to make hit records, either by himself or as a featured artist, I can only watch out for this award nominated artist, listen to his songs and move my body to the beautiful rhythm and underlying beats. He’s definitely one artist to watch out for!

I REP YQ!

Listen to his most recent single: “Money can’t buy me love”

Listen to the award nominated hit song: “Efimile” ft. Da Grin

Listen to his collaboration with M.I: Area

Listen to my personal favorite collaboration with YQ: “Wine your Tinkolo” by Dampte ft. YQ
